Ten suspected al-Qaeda operatives appeared before Yemen’s state security court today on charges they blew up the local office of Canada’s Nexen Inc. in 2008.
The defendants are also charged with plotting attacks on domestic military and security forces, foreign companies and diplomats.
Operations of Nexen and other companies were attacked in Yemen, the ancestral homeland of Osama bin Laden, the founder of terrorist organization al-Qaeda. The blast didn’t injure anyone or reduce production, Nexen said in 2008.
A security guard working for a contractor hired by Nexen was killed in September 2006 in an attack on an oil storage terminal at the port of Dubba. In 2002, a French tanker hired by Nexen to carry oil from Yemen was crippled by a suspected terrorist blast.
The accused men denied the charges. “You are enemies of God and Islam,” Badar Al-Sudani, one of the defendants, told the judge.
