Suspected al-Qaida militants killed two policemen and kidnapped a senior intelligence officer in southern province of Abyan on Sunday, a provincial security official told Xinhua.

"The al-Qaida militants opened fire on the two policemen while they were stationed near the branch building of the Central Bank of Yemen in Zinjibar, the provincial capital city of Abyan," the official said on condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, al-Qaida militants abducted a senior intelligence officer from near a security barracks located at the western edge of Abyan, on a highway linking Al-Bayda and Aden provinces, according to the same official.

No further details were available, but the official said the abducted intelligence officer was in a mission to investigate al- Qaida attack on Saturday against a security checkpoint which also guarded a secret weapons store in Radaa in Al-Bayda province, which left six policemen killed as al-Qaida militants seized more than 200 rifles, five machine guns and two police vehicle.

Besides the problems of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula in the south and east of the country, Yemen's security and stability have also been undermined by the anti-government protests since mid February which demand an immediate end to the 33-year rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
