Yemeni Police arrested five suspects for probing whether they sought to attack a security van transporting six al-Qaida detainees and to liberate them, Yemen's Defence Ministry said on Saturday.

The ministry said the six al-Qaida defendants were sent back by the van from an appeal security court in Sanaa to the prison on Wednesday, when the five suspects in a car tailed after the van.

The six al-Qaida members were sentenced by court to jail terms ranging from five to 10 years for involving in a gang run by al- Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) to attack foreign and local targets, said the statement posted on the ministry's website.

The resurgent AQAP has reportedly carried out a string of suicide attacks against foreign, government and security targets across Yemen.

The Sanaa government stepped up security operations and air raids against AQAP after the regional terrorist group boasted they were behind a failed attempt to blow up a U.S.-bound passenger plane last December.
